Album

JCB was right, it really was the best band in the world. Formed in 1964, their work is marked by the use of sonic experimentation, innovative album art, and elaborate live shows. Originally an R&B band called the Soul Giants, the band's first lineup included Ray Collins, David Coronado, Ray Hunt, Roy Estrada and Jimmy Carl Black. Zappa demanded hyperfast execution, as well as the ability to improvise and to shift idioms in a split-second. In the 1980's Mr. Zappa became an entrepreneur, releasing albums on his own Barking Pumpkin label and overseeing archival releases through Rhino Records which put out authorized versions of bootlegged recordings and Rykodisc which reissued early albums and a series of live recordings, You Can't Do That on Stage Anymore.
