Michael Schneider. Franz Ignaz Beck was an exact contemporary of Haydn, and his symphonies achieved almost as much popularity as Haydn's-especially in France. The three works recorded here are all full-length, four-movement works in established classical forms. All of these influences found their way into his music, which included at least 24 symphonies. Half of the Op. 3 set published in Paris in 1762, the three works on this disc follow the standard 4 movement format with a minuet as the third section. From the very beginning of the G Minor Symphony, No. 3 of the series, paired horns propel the energetic 'Allegro con spirito'. Franz Ignaz Beck began his violin studies with his father, Johann Aloys Beck died 1742, an oboist and Rector of the Choir School at the Palatinate Court in Mannheim. He also learned double bass and organ, among other instruments, and eventually came under the tutelage of Johann Stamitz, the director of instrumental music and leader of the brilliant Mannheim court orchestra.
