Freq is a 1985 album by English singer and musician Robert Calvert. It was recorded during the time of the UK miners' strike 1984-1985 and in between the songs it features snippets of field recordings by Calvert with miners on a picket line, with Calvert displaying his sympathy for their cause. The lyrics cover various themes, only All the Machines are Quiet and Picket Line being explicitly concerned with the miners' strike. The music review online magazine Pitchfork placed The Body, the Blood, the Machine at number 186 on their list of top 200 albums of the 2000s. The genius of The Body, The Blood, The Machine isn't necessarily in its melodies, or even in what the album sonically ends up as. This album has its priorities straight. It's precisely emotional and emotionally precise. They're tight, yet dynamic. The spaces in the guitar line from which the vocals emerge in Returning to the Fold turn the song into an anthem. And one about the illusion of death, no less: I regret leaving my soul, I forgot I needed it, To feel, Maybe when I die, I'll just grab it real quick, I'm comin' right back. At a point where you typically start to see some sag in the quality of what most veteran bands put out, AFI continue to thrive and appear to be on an uptick in their career.
