Album
Replicas is the second and final studio album by English new wave band Tubeway Army, released in April 1979 by Beggars Banquet Records. It followed their self-titled debut from the previous year. After this, Tubeway Army frontman Gary Numan would continue to release records under his own name, though the musicians in Tubeway Army would continue to work with him for some time. Replicas was the first album of what Numan later termed the machine phase of his career, preceding The Pleasure Principle and. Replicas - The First Recordings - Gary Numan, Tubeway Army. Gary Numan , Tubeway Army. it's cold outside And the paint's peeling off of my walls There's a man outside In a long coat, grey hat, smoking a cigarette Now the light fades out And i'm wondering what i'm doing in a room like this There's a knock on the door And just for a second i thought i remembered you So. By the release of their second album, Replicas, Gary Numan was the undisputed focal point and leader of icy electro-punkers Tubeway Army. And the move proved to be massively successful back home in the U. where both the album and the single Are 'Friends' Electric topped the charts. The band had made a conscious effort to streamline the sound heard on its 1978 self-titled debut - the distorted guitar riffs were played on Moog synthesizers instead, and Numan had perfected his faux-space-age persona. Numan is now of course the massively famous and influential electro-pop pioneer best known for 'cars'. You know the one. And here comes the old Philip K. Dick presence, although he didn't take the name 'Replicas' from the android's names of 'replicants' as this only featured in the film 'blade runner' which was made three years after the release of this album - so there's that myth put to rest. The music on the album can be perfectly summed up by the hit single 'are friends electric' a great and catchy song that propelled Numan into the public eye, and set him up for his first solo debut. On April 4th, 1979, Gary Numan and Tubeway Army release their second and final studio album. Tony Webb donated his savings and worked as a roadie to help finance the bands in the beginning. Built around his minimoog, Replicas showcased Numans rapidly developing aptitude as a songwriter and producer resulting in Are Friends Electric , the second single from the album, reaching number one in the British charts. The album itself was soon to follow as well
