The music on this recording was selected from a large collection gathered in and around Salvador, Bahia, during the period 1967-1975. All selections were recorded in the context of the actual ceremonies studied, all in Ketu or Gêge-Nagô cult houses.

Afro-Brazilian Religious Songs CANTIGAS DE CANDOMBLÉCANDOMBLÉ SONGS From. Despite problems, these are fine recordings of Afro-Brazilian Candomblé religious music. The real thing with gusto, recorded by the Casa de Caridade de Oxossi of where, who knows The notes are long but unspecific. As usual in field recordings of large groups of instruments and voices there's an imbalance between the percussion and the choral singing, and as usual the percussion wins out. Candomblé is an Afro-American religion that developed in Brazil during the early 19th century. It arose through a process of syncretism between the traditional Yoruba religion of West Africa and the Roman Catholic form of Christianity. There is no central authority in control of the movement. Candomblé is polytheistic, involving the veneration of deities known as orishas. These are often identified both as Yoruban gods as well as Roman Catholic saints. Various myths and stories are told about these. Accompanied by highly percussive drumming, the ritualistic ceremonies of the Afro-Brazilian candomblé religion have distinctly shaped the musical soundscape of Brazil, influencing many contemporary styles such as the samba and bossa nova. Indicative to a popular dance found in the slave plantations of the Bahian region of North-Eastern Brazil candombe, the term candomblé has become a generic term to designate the religion itself and the locality of cult practices.
