Gladys Moncrieff OBE 13 April 1892 8 February 1976 was an Australian singer who was so successful in musical theatre and recordings that she became known as 'Australia's Queen of Song' and 'Our Glad'. Moncrieff was born in Bundaberg, Queensland. Her father Robert Edward Moncrieff was a piano tuner, and her mother, who went by the stage name Amy Lambell, was a professional singer they lived in North Isis. She attended several schools in north Queensland, and quickly became involved in music. Gladys travelled to every capital city in Australia and New Zealand throughout her career as well as her success in the West End of the UK. She had a deep love of her country and became homesick away from it for too long. In the 1918 Spanish flu world epidemic, Gladys Moncrieff remembers the bizarre experience of singing to a Melbourne audience where everyone were wearing a mask. Only the artists on stage were unprotected but they sang through it all and survived. Gladys Moncrieff 1892-1976, soprano, grew up in Queensland, where she first toured as 'Little Gladys - The Australian Wonder Child' with a small musical road show. She made her stage debut in HMS Pinafore in Sydney in 1914. Henceforth she revelled in great popularity, earning the soubriquet 'Our Glad' in about 1935.
