Album

Colours, blindness and memorial. Romance de la muerte del muy esclarecido rey don Felipe Anonymous. Plorer, gemir, crier, Requiem Pierre de la Rue. To complete a triptych of recordings presenting an alternative view of performance practice from across a century of Franco-Flemish polyphony, Björn Schmelzer and Graindelavoix now turn their attention to music by Alexander Agricola and his contemporaries in Cecus. Following on from the two earlier albums, Joye and La Magdalene, Cecus concerns itself with music associated with blind players notably two fiddlers from Bruges and memory and commemoration laments on the deaths of Agricola and Johannes Ockeghem coming from the chapel of Philippe le Beau and Juana of Castile. Schmelzer's premise is that Agricola was blind cecus in Latin, and that his music involved a detailed representation of the experience of blindness. More specifically, the evidence rests on an odd, textless Agricola composition, in three parts and apparently instrumental, called Cecus non judicat de coloribus A blind man does not judge colors here it is split into its two sections, with motets by Agricola and other composers in between. But whether you buy it or not, Schmelzer's style, brilliantly realized by his ten-voice, mixed-gender chorus Graindelavoix the name refers to the writings of French theorist Roland Barthes, is gorgeous. The Belgian-based early music ensemble Graindelavoix, directed by Björn Schmelzer, are a group of nine highly distinctive voices producing a rough-hewn, earthy sound - a description that may not seem all that promising, but whose effect turns out to be one of devastating eloquence and expressive power - as far removed as you can imagine from the more refined manner of many other. renaissance ensembles. Their instruments, too - lutes, viols, harp, cornetto and occasionally percussion - are every bit as expressive, as they demonstrate in, for example, De la Rue's Absalon, fili mi". Disc IDs 1.
