Grand Funk Railroad, sometimes shortened as Grand Funk, is an American hard rock band popular during the 1970s, which toured extensively and played to packed arenas worldwide. Known for their crowd-pleasing arena rock style, the band was well-regarded by audiences despite a relative lack of critical acclaim. The band's name is a play on words of the Grand Trunk Western Railroad, a line that runs through the band's home town of Flint, Michigan. Grand Funk Railroad were formed in 1968 to offer an exciting fusion of boogie and soul. 1969 saw the advent of hard-rock and their no-nonsense tyle fit perfectly that phenomenon. Just like Led Zeppelin in Bretain, the secret of GFR was to remove any intellectual content and artistic digression from the blues-rock stew, and focus on the riffs and the grooves. Their blue collar attitude allowed them to reach out to a crowd that had been traditionally neglected by rock music of the 1960s. That of Grand Funk Railroad was the first great myth of heavy metal. Translated by G. Grand Funk Railroad sold out New Yorks 50,000-seater Shea Stadium and headlined Londons Hyde Park. Blue-collar America adored their no-nonsense rocknroll music, but the band were despised by the critics. Who the hell are Grand Funk Railroad More to the point, why should we even care who they are. Grand Funk had made an astounding six albums in a little over two years after the live album there came Survival and E Pluribus Funk. Together with sell-out tours, that shouldve resulted in truckloads of cash and a luxurious lifestyle for the band. But this wasnt the case. Grand Funk Railroad released 'Live Album' on Nov. 16, 1970, capitalizing on three previous hit studio projects. After bursting onto the music scene in 1969 with their rock-solid debut On Time , Grand Funk Railroad rapidly started turning heads and ears to their bare-boned, no-frills hard rock and roll. Those ears they turned, however, were not those of your local music critic, but rather of your everyday rock fan. The tag of people's band stuck for a reason: critics be damned, the fans loved 'em. Both On Time , and the follow-up simply titled Grand Funk , were released in 1969 and both made good showings, their debut hitting Top 30 and the sophomore just missing Top 10. In 1971, Grand Funk Railroad released the album Survival. The album cover depicted the three musicians dressed up as caveman, hence the survival concept. The album contained two incredible cover songs. The Phoenix album was a turning point in the history of Grand Funk Railroad because of the addition of Craig Fost to the band. For the first time, Grand Funk Railroad were no longer a power trio. In 1973, the band released the album Were an American Band. Grand Funk Railroad had already developed an incredible loyal following among rock and roll fans
