Symphony No. 5 by Gustav Mahler was composed in 1901 and 1902, mostly during the summer months at Mahler's holiday cottage at Maiernigg. Among its most distinctive features are the trumpet solo that opens the work with a rhythmic motif similar to the opening of Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 5, the horn solos in the third movement and the frequently performed Adagietto. In gemessenem Schritt. In his various Mahler recordings for the old Soviet label Melodiya, Kiril Kondrashin was known for taking tempi rather brisker than the latter-day norm in Mahler. This Mahler 5, recorded in 1974 in Moscow, clocks in at almost exactly 63 minutes, whereas most recordings hover around 70 minutes or so. IMHO, in the first two movements, Kondrashin's approach tends to pay the least dividends, by giving those movements a more lightweight feel than usual, even with the opening trumpet fanfare in the funeral march first movement.
