Nick Heyward and Les Nemes had been in several bands together since 1977. They were first known as Rugby, then as the Boat Party, then as Captain Pennyworth, and lastly as Moving England, before finally becoming Haircut One Hundred. Their first and only album released after lead singer Nick Heyward's departure from the group in early 1983, it features Mark Fox as lead vocalist. Unlike the band's first album, Paint and Paint was not a commercial success and failed to chart, and none of the singles released from it reached the UK Top 40. All tracks written by M. Fox, L. Many fans of the original band will have ignored and missed out on this album purely because of the circumstances of it's release, though obviously the mega success of North Of A Miracle probably didn't help the cause. Nick Heyward had departed by this point to sign with Arista, leaving the band and the name Haircut One Hundred with his old label. Haircut One Hundred's music, as directed by Nick Heyward, didn't tackle emotions like alienation, loneliness and despair. Rather, it created its own little fantasy world where there was no aggression and the outlook was very bright. It was pure escapism.
