Some Mobley-holics focus on titles where Mobley was leader, whilst others including me believe many of his best contributions were as a sideman. Who cares, he is just a beautiful player. The solo in Carolyn tears my heart out every time, especially on the second verse, where a repeating cry resolves tension released through a magnificent downward cascade of notes, simply beautiful. The title is lifted from a 1963 Hank Mobley album called No Room for Squares, and the change is telling. Indeed, Room for Squares, Mayers major-label debut he put out a solo acoustic album, Inside Wants Out, on his own in 1999, is instantly likable and accessible. But its no less smart and affecting for that. These thirteen songs are a travelogue of discovery - of love, identity and purpose.
