The six String Quartets, Op. 76 by Joseph Haydn were composed in 1797 or 1798 and dedicated to the Hungarian count Joseph Georg von Erdődy 17541824. They form the last complete set of string quartets that Haydn composed. At the time of the commission, Haydn was employed at the court of Prince Nicolaus Esterházy II and was composing the oratorio The Creation as well as Princess Maria Hermenegild Esterházy's annual mass. Besides the compositions themselves, the performers in this release, the Alban Berg Quartet ABQ, are a leading ensemble with a particular affinity for Classical Era music, including other fine Haydn releases and a couple of Mozart recordings which are outstanding their set of Mozarts Prussian Quartets and also the big K 5151516 string quintets. The Alban Berg Quartet has produced an artistically and technically superb version of Haydn's op. 76 string quartets. In particular, The Sunrise is above all expectations. Product description.
