Текст песни: I lost myself on a cool damp night I gave myself in that misty light Was hypnotized by a strange delight Under a lilac tree. Lilac Wine has been recorded by a number of artists including Eartha Kitt 1953, Helen Merrill in her album Helen Merrill with Strings 1955, Judy Henske on her debut, self-titled album 1963, Nina Simone on her album Wild Is the Wind 1966, Elkie Brooks 1978 and Jeff Buckley on his album Grace 1994. The Jeff Buckley version was used as background music in the 2006 French film Tell No One. It also appears on Katie Melua's debut studio album Call Off the Search 2003. Barb Jungr recorded a version for her 2008 tribute album to Nina Simone, Just Like a Woman. Album 2004 9 Songs. Jazz , 2004. Accompanied by a large orchestra from Czechoslovakia that is arranged by Torrie Zito, Merrill interprets all of the material at a slow dreamy tempo. The results are subtle, quietly emotional, and atmospheric. The only real change of pace is Marian McPartland's instrumental Portrait of Helen Merrill. Otherwise all of the music is taken at the same slow tempo and in a similar mood. Despite the lack of variety, this quiet outing grows in interest with each listen. Helen Merrill is the debut studio album by vocalist Helen Merrill, on which she's accompanied by trumpeter Clifford Brown in arrangements by the young Quincy Jones. Brown had recorded a somewhat similar album with Sarah Vaughan only a few days previously, on December 16 and 18, 1954. In 1995, on the fortieth anniversary of this debut album, Merrill recorded a tribute album to Brown, who had been killed in a car crash in 1956, the year after their collaborative album was released.
