Hi-Tension is the sole album by Britfunk band Hi-Tension, released in 1978 by Island Records. Following the domestic success of the band's hit single Hi-Tension, considered the first Britfunk song, the band recorded the album with producers Alex Sadkin and Kofi Ayivor at Island Studios, London. Disagreements arose between producer Sadkin, who proposed a commercial direction, and band leader David Joseph who wanted the album to retain the band's aggressive live sound. Hi-Tension isn't a masterpiece, but the uptempo funk selections which draw on influences ranging from Kool & the Gang and Earth, Wind & Fire to Brass Construction are generally catchy and enjoyable. Also pleasing are the LP's romantic slow jams, which include Autumn Love and the War-influenced You're My Girl. This respectable, if imperfect, LP didn't sell in the U. but if you're discussing British R&B of the 1970s, it's an album that has to be mentioned. Track Listing. Hi-Tension were briefly at the vanguard of British funk, and their sole album remains a vibrant capture of a simpler time. Running in tandem with punk, this first wave of what became known as Brit funk emulated the prevalent US soul sound, but simultaneously had a uniquely underlying jagged edge. Although it took Hi-Tension until 1978 to release their debut album, they did so on Island, one of the most hallowed record labels of all time. Produced by group mentor Ayivor and Alex Sadkin, who would soon produce Grace Jones groundbreaking work at Compass Point Studios, and in part by Blackwell himself, this album captured the best of the groups electrifying stage set
