Mankind is still built on loops and odd sounds, but the textures are sparser and the instruments are more traditional-sounding. The drums usually sound like drums, there are keyboards, and most importantly. Its unfair to ask a band not to evolve and grow, but if that's done in a way that destroys all the factors that made it special in the first place, theres a problem. Not all of High Places vs. Mankind is a letdown Constant Winter builds up a nice head of steam and When It Comes has a pretty melody and a good groove, but enough of it comes off as too slick or too filler-y that its easy to write the band off as a loss. Listen free to High Places High Places vs. Mankind The Longest Shadows, On Giving Up and more. 10 tracks 39:49. High Places is an American duo formed in in May 2006 by multi-instrumentalist Robert L. Barber sometimes known as Robbie Barber and vocalist Mary Pearson. It began as an experiment in collaboration: two people with diverse artistic backgrounds coming together to merge their skills, aesthetic tastes, and music-making approaches. High Places is the debut full-length from Brooklyn indie band High Places. The album was released September 23, 2008, by Thrill Jockey. The track From Stardust to Sentience was listed as the 417th best song of the 2000s by Pitchfork Media. Mankind by High Places, The Los Angeles-based indie duo releases its second studio album. Mankind is their most complete work to date, which ends much as it began, with the bands love of outright pop. Read full review. Mankind, album two excluding a compilation affair, sets out to shatter any notion that this Los Angeles via Brooklyn thats right: the two actively moved away from the fertile creative communities of the NYC borough is a one-trick pony. The more beat-based numbers on their debut tended to be overlooked but here, from the very outset, these pulses and thuds, rattles and taps take centre stage. Formed as a Brooklyn duo in 2006, High Places have since relocated to Los Angeles, whose warmer temps and mountain vistas better fit the warmth of High Places music and personalities. But relocation was but a small part of whats. But, from the opening of High Places vs. Mankind, its clear theres something very, very different. The samples on album opener The Longest Shadows signal this difference pretty clearly: there are distinct drums and synth sounds. Nothing sounds unusual, which makes me worry that the charming found-sound atmosphere was more a choice of necessity, rather than an aesthetic one. The loop is pretty fun, though, so there are no complaints
