Tantilla is the second studio album by the folk rock band House Of Freaks. It is widely considered to be their best work. It was released in 1989 by Rhino Records on CD R2 70846 and 12 vinyl R1 70846. The album was remastered and reissued by Rhino Handmade in 2004 RHM2 7858, with thirteen additional tracks, seven of which were previously unreleased. House of Freaks was a two-man band formed in Richmond, Virginia in the mid-1980s. Bryan Harvey played guitar and sang, and Johnny Hott played percussion. The band managed to achieve a remarkably full sound, mostly because of Hott's inventive drumming and Harvey's confident vocals and knack of playing bass lines on his guitar cribbed from his many years as a bass player while simultaneously playing a melody. I was introduced to House of Freaks back in the 80's and loved them I had Tantilla on cassette tape, but haven't had a way of playing a cassette for years and forgot about them. Recently my daughter triggered a memory and I was on a quest to find this CD. Originally conceived as a loose concept album along the lines of The Band's self-titled 1969 masterpiece, Tantilla is a reflection on the American South, exploring issues of race and Southern guilt in a low-key, non-didactic style.
