Huang Chung is the self-titled debut album of the band Huang Chung later known as Wang Chung. Huang Chung was released on March 4, 1982 on both vinyl and cassette. Included on the album cover is the name of the band in Chinese 黃鐘, literally Yellow Bell meaning the first note in the Chinese classical music scale. On September 19, 1995, One Way Records re-released the album on CD under license from Arista Records. The album has since been discontinued. Wang Chung's eponymous debut - released when they were still called Huang Chung - is a misguided collection of light New Romantic pop that relies less on drum machines and stylized keyboards than their contemporaries. A huang chung is a type of Chinese reed or wind instrument but I'll be darned if I can hear any such thing on this record, unless the particular saxophone in question happens to be Chinese-made. Given their moniker, and the cover a rather dour-looking bunch with fake names- -Darwin Hogg- -and the requisite silly hair that unfortunately renders them hard to take very seriously, and several song titles 'China', 'Chinese Girls', 'Rising In The East' you would think this would be an exotic sort of affair as it is, it's rather mainstream. This was a platter that stood out in 1982, among the keyboards and analog synths, because it has a saxophone at the base of the songs. It's not as versatile as a keyboard, but it works.
