Mezzo-soprano Patricia Bardon as Orlando sings well enough in a technical sense, but is on the dull side dramatically. The rest of the cast is more interesting, particularly Harry van der Kamp as the magician Zoroastro, and the sweet-voiced Rosa Mannion as Dorinda. It's really William Christie's show, of course, and his conducting of his talented ensemble is one of the best things about this recording. Sarah Bryan Miller. Hilary Summers offers a very sensitively sung Medoro, pure and shapely in line. As Angelica, Rosemary Joshua's musicianship comes through in her attractive phrasing and timing. William Christie and his Les Arts Florissants, in residence at the Théâtre de Caen, have been one of the foremost ensembles in the early music camp since 1979 and I havent heard a mediocre recording with them. It was, at least during the early stages, the French music that, naturally enough, was closest to them and performances and recordings of the works by Lully and, most notably, Marc-Antoine Charpentier, have long been established classics. Christie has also managed to surround himself with the best singers in the genre. As her lover Medoro Hilary Summers dark contralto contrasts well with Ms Joshuas lighter voice.
