Live at the Budokan is a live album by the Ian Gillan Band, recorded live on 22 September 1977 in Tokyo, Japan. Originally it was released only in Japan, in 1978 by EastWorld Records, being 'Live At The Budokan' EWS-81112 and 'Live At The Budokan Vol. 2' EWS81113. Each was a single LP in a gatefold sleeve. Several songs from the set did not make it to the albums, as evidenced by audience tapes ROIO. Originally it was released only in Japan, is the Master Release for the 'Live At The Budokan - Volumes I & II' in the red & black 'rising sun' sleeve, issued in all of the world except Japan & Australia which are in a black sleeve. Ian Gillan Band was a jazz-rock fusion band formed by Deep Purple singer Ian Gillan in 1975 After leaving Deep Purple in 1973, Ian Gillan had retired from the music business to pursue other business ventures, including a motorbike manufacturing company and a hotel. These ventures all ended in failure. This fact, combined with a warm reception to his guest appearance at the Butterfly Ball in 1975 prompted him to resume a singing career and form a new band. First released as a two-LP set in 1982 and reissued on a single CD in the early '90s, Budokan boasts strong extended versions of Purple classics like Smoke on the Water, Woman from Tokyo, and the moody ballad Child in Time, as well as some songs he'd recorded for his solo projects, including Clear Air Turbulence, Money Lender, and Over. the Hill. Originally it was released in two volumes in Japan in late 1977 and early 1978 by EastWorld Records. In July 1983 it was re-issued as a double album in the UK by Virgin Records. The latter features the full setlist including My Baby Loves Me, which had been omitted from the previous releases
