But Æ. the third album from Australian one-man black metal project Ill Omen, isnt one of those albums that just benefits from a proper listening environment it demands one. Formed in 2006, Ill Omen was originally a mellow down-tempo black metal project not unlike Nocternity or Lunar Aurora. shows sole member IV Temple Nightside, ex-Austere essentially shifting to Skepticism-style funeral doom, with a few blackened sections remaining to spice up the party. As with Ill Omens previous output, Æ. exudes an organic continuity within each song and across all tracks on the album, which is an outcome often not realized when multiple songwriters and musicians are employed. This consistency is achieved by the implementation throughout of dual bass guitar layers one clean and one distorted, notably skeletal percussion, the churning, choir-like atmosphere of tremolo-picked guitars, and a blend of chanted, whispered, and traditional black metal vocals
