Winter's Gate is the seventh studio album by the Finnish melodic death metal band Insomnium. It was released worldwide on September 23, 2016 via Century Media Records. It is a concept album said to be about a group of Vikings who set out to find a fabled island west of Ireland, despite the treacherous winter drawing near. Crafting a 40-minute song is a bold strategy and one that has some really severe inherent challenges. Can you keep the listener interested for the full run-time. Few have tried, let alone succeeded. The best and most obvious 40-minute song that comes to mind is Edge of Sanitys Crimson. Interestingly, Finlands Insomnium wanted to pay homage to Crimson by crafting their own long-form song, similarly filled with diverse moods and sounds notice both are exactly 40-minutes long. The track tells the tale of a group of Vikings who set out on a fabled island west of Ireland, despite the treacherous winter drawing near. Plunging onward, Winter's Gate comes to us not from a starry eyed pack of youngsters but from a veteran group who have proven their mettle and their chops. Nonetheless, will the music captivate the listener with the same all encompassing emotion as past works, namely 2014's masterful Shadows of the Dying Sun. Keyboards, provided by Swallow The Sun's own Aleksi Munter, create an underlying orchestral foundation which upholds the album's varying moods. Clean choral vocals over acoustic guitars around the 19 minute mark show Insomnium wearing the guise of a classic rock band, something this ambitious band manages seamlessly
