Somewhere in Time is the sixth studio album by English heavy metal band Iron Maiden. It was released on 29 September 1986 in the United Kingdom by EMI Records and in the United States by Capitol Records. It was the band's first album to feature guitar synthesisers. Since its release, Somewhere in Time has been certified platinum by the RIAA, having sold over one million copies in the US. Somewhere on Tour was the album's supporting tour. Its one of their most intricately detailed album covers and layered with many in-jokes and nods to their past. Artist Derek Riggs spent weeks on the 32-inch by 15-inch painting. It wore me out quite severely, Riggs revealed in Martin Popoffs book Run For Cover: The Art Of Derek Riggs. I was living in London at the time, and working on that for two months, and it took three months in all I just had to stop, because I had had enough. It got into my head and I just couldnt see anything else. I couldnt. The weakest album from Iron Maiden's classic 80s period, Somewhere in Time is really the first true disappointment in their catalog, too often collapsing under the weight of their now-trademark ambition. Though it sold well on the heels of the hugely successful Powerslave tour, and is often regarded as underrated by Maiden devotees, it clearly finds the band struggling to refresh what was rapidly hardening into formula. Despite this, there were rumours of inner conflict. The extra time off gave him more time to write songs for the next album. No longer did he need Bruce Dickinson to write the lyrics his melodies. Each of Smiths songs is catchy and interesting. There isn't any Revelations or Powerslave this time.
