The Serenade, after Plato's Symposium, is a composition by Leonard Bernstein for solo violin, strings and percussion He completed the serenade in five movements on August 7, 1954. For the serenade, the composer drew inspiration from Plato's Symposium, a dialogue of related statements in praise of love, each statement made by a distinguished speaker. The seven speakers who inspired Bernstein's five movements are: I. Phaedrus: Pausanias marked Lento and Allegro. Aristophanes marked Allegretto. He and Bernstein play Bartok's masterpiece with the right blend of fiery passion and deep-voiced lyricism. One of the remarkable features of Stern's interpretation in the outer movements, and one that dates it really and makes it of its time and age - but in my opinion for the better - is that he doesn't take every lyrical passage as an excuse to slam the brakes and linger like Heifetz', Stern's lyricism unfolds within a tempo. I had never listened much to Bartok's work before hearing Isaac Stern's recording of the Second Violin Conerto, performed with the New York Philharmonic under the direction of Leonard Bernstein.
