Released on vinyl only in February 2003 this sought-after release was elusive and virtually unknown to the casual Dilla fan until Stones Throw's reissue in 2007. Recorded in the wake of a failed deal with major label, Dilla returned to solo recordings as a fiercely independent artist with Ruff Draft. Ruff Draft is a studio album and EP by American hip hop producer and rapper J Dilla released under the moniker Jay Dee. It was originally released in February 2003 as an EP, by his then-newly founded label, Mummy Records, and distributed by Groove Attack, a German record label. In 2007, Ruff Draft was extended, remastered, and posthumously re-released as a solo album by Stones Throw Records. The re-release sold 8,049 copies in its first week, J Dilla's largest first-week sales as a solo artist. Ruff Draft is an EP-album by late, highly acclaimed hip hop producer-rapper J Dilla, released in 2003 through Stone Throw Records. It was released exclusively on vinyl before a 2007 reissue. One of Dillas least known projects, Ruff Draft was a response to his other project at the time The Diary being shelved by MCA Records. As a result, the album was recorded and mixed in only a week. Stylistically Ruff Draft showcases some of Dillas more experimental work, much of which he would imitate on his most recognised and adored efforts as a solo artist on Donuts. The project has gained mainly posit. While Dilla awaited the fate of a solo album set to be released by MCA - which, due to corporate upheaval, wound up being thrown into indefinite unreleased limbo - he knocked out Ruff Draft, a ten-track EP released in 2003 on his and Frank-N-Dank's short-lived Mummy label. Distributed only in Germany, the 12 was aimed at Dilla's real n gg s only. Ruff Draft is an album by the late former Slum Village member Jay Dee also known as J Dilla. In 2007, Ruff Draft was remastered and re-released as the third official solo album by Stones Throw Records. The fact that Ruff Draft was pressed only on vinyl and distributed in limited numbers meant that this shift wouldn't manifest itself to a wider extent until his Madlib collaboration Champion Sound. And there's a handful of other tracks that could easily justify a purchase for any Dilla fiend: Reckless Driving features the producerMC quoting Biggie's Hypnotize and spitting windows-down whip-appeal verses the production relies heavily on a droning space-goth synth, which gives the track a retro feel- but retro when, exactly, feels elusive. Though these criticisms now seem shortsighted, they inspired a ferocious response from Dilla in the form of Ruff Draft, a scruffy, fiercely insular statement of purpose from an artist who refused to be cowed by naysayers. Detroit MCs like Frank & Dank, Guilty Simpson and Lil Bit make some memorable guest appearances but the focus here remains firmly on Dillas beats. Ultimately, Ruff Draft is a curiosity-an offshoot rather than example of Dillas genius. The intro suggests listening to the album while you bounce in your whip, and though I dont know exactly what that means, I think Ruff Draft is more likely to send you back to your stacks with a plate of ideas than it is to bounce or whip anything. Fuck this review. I just pulled out Donuts, Ambient 1: Music For Airports, Jay Dees Jaylib collaboration with Madlib, and Remain In Light.
