Jan Dismas Zelenka 1679-1745 was the son of a small-town organist in Bohemia. He was educated in Prague at a Jesuit college, he traveled at least briefly to Vienna and to Italy, and his musical tradition was that of the Italian-Viennese catholic composers - Caldara and Fux, for instance. Opportunity took him away from that musical ambience, however, to spend the bulk of his career in Dresden, in the shadow of the German-school Kapellmeister JD Heinichen
