Notes

Jam Ladislaw Dussek (1761-1812) was one of the most ,renowned pianist-composers of the late XVIIIth and early XlXth centuries. His first instruction came from his father, Johann Joseph Dussek (born about 1739), himself a musician of note and organist in his home town of Caslav in Bohemia. The young Dussek was taught theory and keyboard commencing at age five, and in time became assistant organist alongside his father. He worked for a while as organist in several small Bohemian towns, then moved to Prague, where he studied theology and obtained his bachelor’s degree. After holding several more posts as organist, during which time he began to give concerts, he moved to Amsterdam. Here and at the Hague he met with great success, and devoted his time to composing, teaching and concertising.

At the age of twenty-two, Dussek moved to Hamburg, where he took lessons in composition from Carl Philipp Emmanuel Bach, Sebastian’s second son. The benehts of this experience were to last Dussek throughout his career as a composer.

His restless, questing nature soon led him to move again, and so we find Dussek a year later astonishing Berlin audienceshwith his virtuosity. From here he moved to St. Petersburg, thence to Paris, Where in 1786 he was enchanting Marie Antoinette with his pyrotechnics and wit. From Paris he went to Italy, where he earned more laurels as a performer. He returned to Paris, only to leave again in haste as the revolution approached. This time he chose London, Where he remained for over a decade. He made his first appearance in the English capital in 1790 at one of the concerts organized by the violinist Salomon, who had also brought over Joseph Haydn. London was quick” to recognize Dussek’s genius. His services as a teacher were in high demand, and he circulated in the most fashionable musical circles. Dussek received many compliments in his day, but one of the most flattering was contained in a letter written by Haydn to Dussek’s father (Haydn was moved, on a previous occasion, to write a similarly complimentary letter to Leopold Mozart, concerning young Wolfgang’s gifts). At the time of this letter, Haydn was at the height of his fame, composing the immortal Salomon Symphonies. H Symphonies. He writes:

“Most Worthy Friend,

I thank you from my heart that, in your last Letter to your dear son, you have also remembered me. I therefore double my compliments in return, and consider myself fortunate in being able to assure you, that you have one of the most upright, moral, and, in music, eminent of men, for a son. I love him just as you do, for he fully deserves it. Give him, then, daily, a father’s blessing, and thus will he be ever fortunate, which I heartily wish him to be, for his remarkable talents. I am, with all respect, your most sincere friend,

Joseph, Haydn.

London, Feb. 26, 1792

In 1792 Dussek married Sophia Corri, a pianist and singer, the daughter of one Domenico Corri, with whom he formed a partnership in a music store, a venture that ended in bankruptcy. To evade his creditors, Dussek secretly fled England, and is reported to have taken up with a German lady of means. He lived at her country estate for two years, giving concerts from time to time. Following one of these concerts in Prague, Dussek travelled to his home town of Caslav to visit his father, whom he had not seen in twenty five years.

In Magdeburg, he chanced to meet Prussia’s Prince Louis Ferdinand. A close friendship developed, Dussek instructing the Prince in piano and composition. He remained with the Prince for three years, until the latter was killed at Saalfeld.

Once more, Dussek’s life was upset. After some years of service as court musician to Prince von Isenburg, he entered the service of France’s Talleyrand. Here at last he found some measure of serenity. He taught a little, gave occasional concerts introducing his latest works, and occupied himself mainly with composition, remaining with Talleyrand until he died.

Dussek is credited with being the first pianist to place his instrument sideways on the stage. He left a large volume of published works and many more in manuscript, includlng works in every form, with the notable exception of sacred music.
