Regarded by many as the best album Japan ever did, Gentlemen Take Polaroids was no doubt revolutionary, excitng, and quite different from anything Japan had done before. David Sylvian had developed as a songwriter, finally finishing the shedding of the overt glamDavid Bowie influence that so heavily dominated the early Japan work, and moving into a dancesynth popproto ambient direction. Like Quiet Life, Gentlemen Take Polaroids is a mainly electronic album characterised by the distinctive playing of its members, particularly Sylvian and Karn, but it is much moodier than its predecessor, with much of the pop and dance factor removed. The arrangements are much more intricate and dense, and the production is a lot slicker and cleaner for all these reasons the album has been compared to Low 1977 by David Bowie, whom Japan have cited as an influence on a number of occasions. At the time of Gentlemen Take Polaroids release in November 1980, Japan were widely considered to be a joke. Japans current sound is one long, diffuse outtake from Roxy Musics Flesh And Blood, reckoned the NME. The group had always worn their influences on their sleeves and were the epitome of a group whod grown up in public. Their first two albums sounded like the aural equivalent of adolescent photo-booth strips: naïve, gawky and fuelled by misplaced hormones. The glam influences still hung heavy, particularly from Roxy Music, but now the band found itself starting to affect others in turn. Even the back cover photo says as much - looking cool in glossy, elegant nightwear, the quintet had a clear impact on Duran Duran, to the point where Nick Rhodes obviously was trying to be Sylvian in appearance
