Jay McShann. Released: Feb 2007. Label: Rhino Atlantic. Pianist, vocalist and bandleader Jay McShann was never a huge draw back in the swing era, but his blues-soaked reputation kept growing deep into the age of rocknroll. This 1971 set should put any doubts about his jump blues legacy to rest. These two Manhattan sessions really do constitute a bash in the Big Apple. Both sets feature guitarist John Scofield and woodwind star Herbie Mann, with baritone sax titan Gerry Mulligan joining one session while Doc Cheatham plays trumpet on the other one.
