A great collection of Jefferson Airplane's early albums, with the original artwork on cardboard sleeves, like mini LP's. These discs contain all the original material, and most include additional tracks as well, some mono mixes that were released as singles, some alternate takes and other miscellanea. This 5 album collection pretty much covers their output for the crucial late '60s period. I'm not a big fan of extra content - often inferior early takes, demos or stuff that wasn't good enough to make the LP. But there's some decent alternative & live versions of some songs here. A strange omission was the album 'Volunteers' but you can't have everything. The Platinum & Gold Collection is part of Arista Records' Platinum & Gold Collection. Recorded between 1966 & 1969, this compilation serves as a primer for both the early years of Jefferson Airplane and the golden age of psychedelic rock. The group was signed by RCA Victor, and their debut album went charted 128, selling 10,000 copies in the San Francisco area. Anderson left to have a baby and was replaced by Grace Slick, Spence left to form Moby Grape and was replaced by Spencer Dryden, which began the group's definitive lineup. They performed at the Woodstock and Altamont festivals but then had its second major shakeup when Dryden left in 1970 to join New Riders Of The Purple Sage he was replaced by Joey Covington, and the band stopped touring when Slick became pregnant by Kantner.
