Goode, Lover Man and more. 8 tracks 43:54. This album was released post-humously in 1972. It represents Hendrix at the peak of his playing ability. The playing is tight and focused. The 13 minute cut of Red House alternately whispers and soars. The entire solo is subtly nuanced and shows Hendrix' seamless playing to its greatest advantage. It is a great shame that this album ever went out of print. It is probably excepting Electric Lady Land the best work the Experience ever did. It is at once raucous and subtle and in ret. Hendrix in the West. There were a lot of terrible album debacles in the wake of Jimi Hendrix's death in 1970, but there were a handful of keepers. The Cry of Love and Rainbow Bridge were both excellent, but now the material from both albums has been officially released as part of First Rays of the New Rising Sun or on another compilation. Even the best material from the really bad albums like Midnight Lightning and War Heroes, has now been officially released without the egregious posthumous overdubs. But somehow, In the West, one of those keepers, remained basically out o. This 1972 release proved to be one of the superior issues. The recordings are from four sources: Winterland, San Francisco, 1968, San Diego Sports Arena, 1969, the Berkeley Community Center, 1970, and the Isle of Wight, 1970. It is all prime Hendrix. His playing is spirited and light years away from the competition. And if one needed a single, concise live album to explain the Hendrix myth, this is as good a starting point as any.
