HARLEM SHOUT, Vol. 2 1935-1936 is a 1968 DECCA reissue from the French Jazz Heritage Series. It was available in both mono DL 9238 and simulated stereo DL 79238. Similar to Andy Kirk, Jimmie Lunceford's family moved to Denver, CO. where Jimmie studied with Paul Whiteman's dad. He could play several instruments but was primarily an alto saxophonist. Lunceford's orchestra grew out of a student band organized during his stint as a Memphis, TN. high school phys. They toured from 1929 to '34, then landed a steady gig at Harlem's C. From The Album. Play album. Jimmie Lunceford. Lunceford was born in Fulton, Mississippi. Little is known about his parents, though his father was a choirmaster in Warren, Ohio, before the family moved to Denver. Lunceford went to high school in Denver and studied music under Wilberforce J. Whiteman, father of Paul Whiteman, whose band was soon to acquire a national reputation.
