Joan Baez is the debut album by folk singer Joan Baez. The album was recorded in the summer of 1960 and released the same year. The original release featured 13 traditional folk songs. Later reissues included three additional songs. In 2015, the album was selected for induction into National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress for special recognition and preservation as one of the sound recordings in over 130 years of recording history that has cultural, artistic andor historical. Joan Baez's second album, recorded when she was 20 years old, is a hearty helping of folk masterpieces that give ample evidence to exactly how she was established as a leader of the contemporary folk scene of the day. The material chosen is truly exceptional, from the beautifully stark British ballad The Trees They Do Grow High to the tragic tales of death and lost love in Engine 143 and Banks of the Ohio, which recall the Carter Family in presentation as much as spirit. Add gift options. I first heard this album as a 33 record, in the 1960's. Hearing it again on CD is such a rush. I think early Joan Baez, quite apart from my own nostalgia, in her folk-singing period, was one of the shining stars of the genre. She turned me, and many of my contemporaries on to the roots of our folk traditions, and brought a grace and pure-voiced clarity to these songs that ensure they will continue to endure, even in the face of the modern day ballads.
