Summer in the City: Live in New York is a live album, produced by Joe Jackson and Sheldon Steiger. With semi-classical pieces on his previous three recordings, Jackson proved he had not abandoned pop altogether in June 2000, with this issue, an album drawn from an August 1999 concert. While the three don't always play to a song's strengths You Can't Get What You Want, for one, misses the full-band treatment, this release does showcase Jackson's piano and the group's interplay. Jackson is probably best known for the hit singles Is She Really Going Out With Him 1979 and Steppin' Out 1982. Although born in Staffordshire, Jackson grew up in Portsmouth, Hampshire, England. He started off learning to play the violin but soon switched to piano. From the age of 16 he played in bars, and won a scholarship to study musical composition at London's Royal Academy of Music.
