Right from the start, Cale makes it clear he's not messing around on Fear. If his solo career before then had been a series of intriguing stylistic experiments, here he meshes it with an ear for his own brand of pop and rock, accessible while still clearly being himself through and through. Getting musical support from various Roxy Music veterans like Brian Eno, Phil Manzanera, and Andy Mackay didn't hurt at all, and all the assorted performers do a great job carrying out Cale's vision. If John Cale can be considered a Sancho Panza to Lou Reeds sometimes Quixotic pop avatar, its only through imprecise interpretation of the obvious. True, few will contest Cales role as second fiddle, viola as it were, to Reeds presence both in regards to the Velvet Underground and in pop music culture at large. Thus, all the quirks of Cales early song writing chops are on exceptional display here, as declared by album opener Fear Is a Mans Best Friend. Cales dreamy piano melody suckers the listener in, growing more emphatic and piling alongside the rhythm section in the throbbing chorus. Fear is a music album by John Cale released in 1974.
