American Fool is the fifth studio album by John Mellencamp, released under the stage name John Cougar in 1982. The album was his commercial breakthrough, holding the No. 1 position on the Billboard album chart for nine weeks. According to a 1983 article in the Toledo Blade, the song Danger List originated when Mellencamp heard his guitarist Larry Crane playing some chords in a basement rehearsal room. I turned on the tape recorder and sang 30 verses, Mellencamp explained. I just made them up. American Fool stayed on top of the album chart for a couple months. The LP would end up going platinum five times. Although Mellencamp wasnt fully satisfied with his songwriting on American Fool , he was thrilled to reap the rewards of success. One of those was the ability to begin reclaiming his actual name. If Mellencamp isn't crazy about American Fool , listeners sure have been. I love doing NOTHING. John Cougar Mellencamp cant help it. All he has to do is open his mouth and out oozes insincerity, the snake oil of patent imitations of Bruce Springsteen and Bob Seger. Or for good measure, hell pour on a little Tom Petty or Graham Parker. The engine is a tight, unpretentious Indiana band, and Cougar, who produced American Fool with engineer Don Gehman, seldom lets it idle. Guitarists Larry Crane and Mike Wanchic know how to raise a ruckus, and drummer Ken Aronoff is good at interrupting it with an authoritative thump. No extra chrome clutters the arrangements, which are so stripped down that even the simplest touches are telling. Album 1982 10 Songs. American Fool Remastered. These two songs are the only true keepers on American Fool, but the rest of the record works better than his previous material because his band is tighter than ever before, making his weaker moments convincing. Besides, songs like Hand to Hold On To and China Girl, for all their faults, do indicate that his sense of craft is improving considerably
