The second album-length collaboration between Jon Anderson and Vangelis is almost perfect in its blending of elements it's only when the pair tries to do some serious rocking on Back to School that things take a bit of a nosedive. Our friend played the song, Friends of Mr. Cairo for us and we were entranced from the first moment. It gets you involved cos they're telling a story and it's lush with visuals. The opening grabs you and holds you through the entire song. 0 out of 5 stars I have always liked Jon and Vangelis and this album does not. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 18, 2018. Verified Purchase. It's 1980 and Jon Anderson from a fumbling YES joins up with VANGELIS who was both benefactor and beneficiary of the soundtrack era. The strategy worked brilliantly for one album, that incorporated modern at the time electronica and pop into a progressive concept. Friends of Mr Cairo was not a huge American hit but sparked pockets of J&V mania including Ottawa where I spent college years. Mayflower can, too, especially the quiet parts. The Friends of Mr. Cairo is the best track of this album. It has enough of a story going on to make it interesting, although 12 minutes is a bit too long again. And if it were on a good album, it probably wouldn't be considered a highlight
