The Well-Tempered Clavier, BWV 846893, is a collection of two sets of preludes and fugues in all 24 major and minor keys, composed for solo keyboard by Johann Sebastian Bach. In Bach's time Clavier keyboard was a generic name indicating a variety of keyboard instruments, most typically a harpsichord or clavichord but not excluding an organ. The modern German spelling for the collection is Das wohltemperierte Klavier WTK German pronunciation: . Bach gave the. Johann Sebastian Bach 1685 - 1750 . Composed about 20 years apart, the two sets of 24 preludes and Fugues that constitute the two books of Johann Sebastian Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier didnt start off as one huge collection of 48 works in fact, the set of 24 Preludes and Fugues composed in 1742 were not issued as a sequel to the original WTC of 1722. Book I exploits the concept that many more composers from Chopin to moist recently François Dompierre have followed, that of creating a set of works written in every major and minor key. The Well-Tempered Clavier. Preludes an. Bach: Das Wohltemperierte Klavier. Youthful Viennese pianist Till Fellner has performed J. Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier to critical acclaim across Europe, and has made it the backbone of his recital repertoire. For this recording of Book I, Fellner performs the 24 preludes and fugues with a rich and full sound, yet with the refinement and fastidious control required in these comprehensive studies of Baroque keyboard technique. Articulation and balanced phrasing are of paramount importance, and Fellner's energies are directed to the clean execution of lines and the careful shading of contrapuntal voicings. Gustav Leonhardt is one of the great keyboardists of the 20th century, and a great interpreter of Bach. The Well-Tempered Clavier may be one of the great keyboard works in the history of music. Put these two factors together and you have the potential for a great piece of work. Gustav is always the best performer of any Bach piece he played on harpsichord. This is NOT recorded too loud loudness wars my eye
