Hipp was able to claim the honor of having been the only widely known and highly respected female jazz pianist in Germany and beyond Europes First Lady of Jazz until the mid-1980s despite the fact that she never returned to her native country. At the Hickory House is a thoroughly appealing collection of lightly swinging small-combo jazz that draws equally from hard bop and soul-jazz. Europe's First Lady of Jazz moved to New York in 1955, played for five more years, then disappeared - while royalty checks piled up with her record label. Jutta Hipp with Zoot Sims was her first studio album in America. Simss rich tone and easy air paired well with Hipps rollicking, energetic playing, and the album they created together is arguably her finest.
