Album
Tropical Brainstorm is the fifth and final studio album by Kirsty MacColl, released in 2000. It was inspired by her trips to Cuba, and many tracks include Spanish or Portuguese lyrics. Good for Me, a non-album track co-written with James Knight, was her last song. Despite the apparent success of the album certified Silver in the UK, the V2 label dropped MacColl before her death in 2000. The album was released with three extra tracks in the US. Tropical Brainstorm is the final album by Kirsty MacColl, released in 2000. This is a very difficult album to critique in a dispassionate way. A singersongwriter with a nearly perfect bloodline her father was Ewan MacColl and Peggy Seeger was her step-mother, Kirsty MacColl had been writing brilliant songs and releasing modestly successful albums since the early '80s. Her final album, Tropical Brainstorm, is the product of her love affair with Cuba and the subsequent trips she took to Brazil and other South American locales. Though it was recorded in London, the album is full of equatorial color almost to the point of delirium. In the wake of her divorce from producer Steve Lillywhite, Kirsty MacColl took the first of what turned out to be many trips to Cuba. The country had a lasting influence on MacColls creative and political consciousness over her final years, before a 2000 boating accident cut her life short. One could not wish a better end result for the late Kirsty MacColl, whose last album opens with this prediction. Tropical Brainstorm serves as a sunny and joyous bookend on a career cut tragically short. Musically, it is a bit of a departure, favoring vibrant Latin-flavored flourishes over the slightly darker jangle of earlier material. There is, however, no mistaking the album's creator from a lyrical perspective. Tropical Brainstorm, 2000. In These Shoes, 03:38. Treachery, 03:51. Here Comes That Man Again, 04:49.
