Koop is the Swedish electronic jazz duo of Magnus Zingmark and Oscar Simonsson from Uppsala, Sweden, formed in 1995. Though the music may sound as if it is played by a tight jazz group, it is actually sample-based. Thousands of small clips of drums, strings, horns, and choirs are taken from old records and puzzled together into new songs. Before the Swedish duo returned for a third album, they delivered Waltz for Koop: Alternative Takes, a title with great significance. Though superficially this is an album of remixes, similar to that delivered by dozens of independent-minded dance or experimental bands, this record works on its own like few other remix albums ever have - and even rivals the quality of the original. Nicola Conte's take of Tonight, for instance, makes it speedier and more in line with Conte's own aesthetic. Refitting the waltz-rhythm lyrics into a strict 44 beat is troublesome, however, and the vocals seem a little off-kilter because of it a problem that also plagues DJ Patlife's drum 'n' bass version of Waltz for Koop.
