The Threepenny Opera Die Dreigroschenoper is a play with music by Bertolt Brecht, adapted from a translation by Elisabeth Hauptmann of John Gay's 18th-century English ballad opera, The Beggar's Opera, and four ballads by François Villon, with music by Kurt Weill. Although there is debate as to how much, if any, Hauptmann might have contributed to the text, Brecht is usually listed as sole author. As Hinton makes clear in his liner notes, the work has existed in various versions since its premiere in Berlin in 1928, and this one doesn't so much resolve the conflicts as elucidate them. Lotte Lenya, Weill's widow, is - for me - the most memorable of all with Pirate Jenny and Solomon Song. The men are the supporting cast: Martin Wolfson's Peachum is sneaky and sarcastic and his light lisp adds just the right sinister touch. Gerald Price as the street singer opens ominously and closes suitably darkly. Currently as expected the record album is barely playable so, I purchased the CD. It's extraordinary to be able to access this recording, with Lotte Lenya bringing all the pulverizing, ironic energy of her then deceased husband Kurt Weill's score. Still a hugely important LP in the sixties.
