Eli and the Thirteenth Confession is the second album by New York City-born singer, songwriter, and pianist Laura Nyro, released in 1968. Nyro premiered some of the songs that were to appear on the album at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival. The song Luckie was derived from an earlier composition Nyro had played at her audition for Verve Records in 1966. Before she signed to Columbia Records, Verve had already planned to release the album, under the title Soul Picnic. The album saw its actual release. Nyro peaked early, and Eli and the Thirteenth Confession, just her second album, remains her best. It's not only because it contains the original versions of no less than three songs that were big hits for other artists: Sweet Blindness covered by the 5th Dimension, Stoned Soul Picnic also covered by the 5th Dimension, and Eli's Comin' done by Three Dog Night. It's not even just because those three songs are so outstanding. It's because the album as a whole is so outstanding, with its invigorating blend of blue-eyed soul, New Y. Elis Comin -a 1969 hit for Three Dog Night-opens with spooky organ and intimate crooning and then explodes into ebullient soul pop fueled by whooping brass and Nyros sprightly piano.
