At the turn of the '60s, Lee Hazlewood decided to leave America for Sweden. He had already spent time in the country, appearing as an actor in two television productions, so his decision wasn't completely out of the blue - especially since he had become close with the Swedish artistfilmmaker Torbjörn Axelman. Lee Hazlewood spent a good part of the late 1960s traveling the globe, cutting records and inking business deals. A string of hits with Nancy Sinatra enabled Lee to build a mini media empire Lee Hazlewood Industries and afforded him nearly unlimited resourcesfor a time. Probably Hazlewood's single most famous album, Cowboy In Sweden is actually a compilation of tracks meant to complement the Swedish tv program a fantasia starring Hazlewood of the same name. After all these years it's still safe to say that there is little other recorded music like it: it's baroque country in a soundscape drenched in echo. Lee Hazlewood recorded this gem after he left the US for Sweden and he made with it this apocryphal film. The film is odd and I'm not crazy about it but this record kicks ass Pray them bars away is an excellent song sung from the perspective of a prisoner doomed to a failed prison system. Politically it's very ahead of it's time. Cold hard times is one of my favorite tracks on the albums. The production and the strings are beautiful and the lyrics are heartbreaking. read more
