This collection was issued in time to commemorate the centenary of the birth of the composer and includes his most important sacred works including A Festival Anthem , the Missa Brevis and Three Latin Motets. The opening piece, Crux Fidelis is the only one not readily available elsewhere. Berkeley was a devout Roman Catholic and his choral music has been welcomed into the Anglican repertoire as well. As a composer he is difficult to classify. Christopher Robinson leads the Choir of St John's College through some challenging material and, as ever, the bargain price of all Naxos releases makes this worth investigating. Lennox Berkeleys sacred choral works are purely personal creations that, unlike with Britten or Vaughan Williams, do not seem born of innate genius but rather arise more from a profound desire to composeand thus they exhibit substantial referential attributes a bit of the early 20th-century French school, Britten, and Stravinsky at his more harmonically austere and tend to impress. The Three Latin Motets 1972 show another side to Berkeleys development as a composer, a blatant flirtation with atonalism. The Three Latin Motets are wonderful pieces setting ancient texts. They are unaccompanied and in the case of the third, the setting of the Regina Coeli, unbuttoned even extremely joyous.
