The most commercially successful solo singer to be identified with the girl group sound, Lesley Gore hit the number one spot with her very first release, It's My Party, in 1963. Produced by Quincy Jones, who fattened the teenager's sound with double-tracked vocals and intricate backup vocals and horns, she reeled off a few more big hits in 1963 and 1964, including Judy's Turn to Cry, She's a Fool, You Don't Own Me, That's the Way Boys Are, and Maybe I Know. She wasn't the most soulful gi. There was indeed a Lesley Gore album titled Magic Colors, whose release was canceled around late 1967, and the ten tracks that would have comprised it form the basis of this 25-song compilation. However, all 25 of these cuts have been released. In fact most of them including seven of the ten tracks on the canceled LP were released back in the late '60s, although four had to wait until a 1994 German box set to see the light of day. So this is really more of an anthology of Gore's late-'60s recordings with most of the bonus cuts taken from 1968-1969 singles than it is the unea. Lesley Gore is second only to Brenda Lee as America's top-selling solo female recording star of the 1963-1967 timeframe. This CD kicks off with the 10 tracks scheduled for her lost Magic Colors album and concludes with 15 others, all recorded between 1967 and 1969.
