The After Ever suffers from a tendency towards overproduction that would increasingly dog the band over the course of subsequent efforts. Case in point: the hypnotic opener Firefly, its dense, intoxicating melody is hopelessly marred by shrill guitar feedback. Attached is subtler, but it reveals none of the unexpected twists and turns common to Terry Bickers' strongest songs - it feels like filler, and it's the only song from either of Levitation's first two EPs not later reprised on the full-length Coterie collection. The following month, the band released the low key single Squirrel and early recording featuring the first lineup of the band via the new Rough Trade mail-order 7 vinyl singles club. In November 1991 a compilation album, Coterie, was released collating tracks from the band's previous releases along with new live recordings.
