Album
Lewis Barry Tabackin born March 26, 1940 is an American jazz tenor saxophonist and flutist. He is married to pianist Toshiko Akiyoshi with whom he has co-led large ensembles since the 1970s. Tabackin started learning flute at age 12, followed by tenor saxophone at age 15. He has cited Al Cohn and Coleman Hawkins as influences on saxophone, while his flute role models include classical players such as William Kincaid, Julius Baker, and Jean-Pierre Rampal. Tabackin studied flute at the Philadelphia. Tadpoles is the third album by the Bonzo Dog Band. It is largely a compilation of their work from the television show Do Not Adjust Your Set, on which they were the house band. The US version of the album had a track list slightly different from that of the UK version: the US version removed I'm the Urban Spaceman and added Readymades the B-side of their follow-up single Mr. The UK version was reissued on vinyl by Sunset Records in the early 1970s, re-titled I'm the Urban Spaceman. Insights is the fourth studio recording of the Toshiko Akiyoshi Lew Tabackin Big Band and was voted Jazz Album of the Year in the 1978 Down Beat magazine critic's poll. It received the Swing Journal magazine 1976 Gold Disk prize in Japan and was nominated for a 1978 Grammy award in the USA for Best Jazz Instrumental Performance by a Big Band. All tracks from this album are also included on the 2008 Mosaic 3 CD compilation, Mosaic Select: Toshiko Akiyoshi - Lew Tabackin Big Band. The 16-piece group then based in Los Angeles features such soloists as Tabackin on tenor and flute, altoists Gary Foster and Dick Spencer, trombonist Bill Reichenbach, trumpeter Bobby Shew, Steve Hufsteter, and during Notorious Tourist from East tenorman Tom Peterson.
