Andre Cluytens, a Belgian later naturalised as a Frenchman, recorded this set of the complete Beethoven Symphonies with the Berlin Philharmonic between 1957 and 1960. This was the first complete set from EMI in stereo, slightly antedating Klemperer's stereo cycle with the Philharmonia and it antedates Karajan's first set with the BPO by several years. As performances and recordings, it still wears remarkably well. For anyone who wants big-band Beethoven, before HIP and faster tempi became the norm, this is one of the best to be had. Herbert von Karajan recorded Ludwig van Beethoven's complete symphonies four times, first in the 1950s with the Philharmonia Orchestra on EMI, then on three more occasions with the Berlin Philharmonic for Deutsche Grammophon. Karajan's 1963 cycle with Berlin is highly regarded by fans for its consistent interpretations and energetic and emotional playing.
