Beethoven - Pablo Casals And Rudolf Serkin - Casals Festival At Perpignan LP, Album, Mono. Columbia , Columbia. 33CX 1093, Casals i Defilló Catalan: 29 December 1876 22 October 1973, usually known in English as Pablo Casals, was a Spanish cellist, composer, and conductor. He is generally regarded as the pre-eminent cellist of the first half of the 20th century and one of the greatest cellists of all time. He made many recordings throughout his career of solo, chamber, and orchestral music, including some as conductor, but he is perhaps best remembered for the recordings of the Bach Cello. It comes from the Prades Festival - Pablo Casals' annual concert series in his adopted town in France. Serkin's technique, never entirely impeccable, is fiery here, burning through the fast variations at a white heat. His tone is astoundingly varied here, brightly shining in the contrapuntal variations and clearly glowing in the lyrical variations. But, most importantly, the interpretation is astonishingly individualistic. The comedy, tragedy, melancholy, and depth of humanity are characteristically Serkin's. Peter Serkin, Rudolf's son wrote some notes about the album: ''The Complete Columbia Album Collection - My Father's recordings for Columbia and my years growing up were somewhat contemporaneous. He had recorded for HMV on 78s up until then, and made some marvelous recordings, some solo, but largely sonatas, trios and quintets with my grandfather, Adolf Busch.
