It was released on May 22, 1990, by Sire Records to promote and accompany the film Dick Tracy. In the film Madonna starred as Breathless Mahoney and her then-boyfriend Warren Beatty played the title role. After filming was complete, Madonna began work on the film's soundtrack, with songwriter Stephen Sondheim, producer Patrick Leonard and engineer Bill Bottrell. A collection of songs featured or inspired by the comic-book-turned-movie Dick Tracy, I'm Breathless is essentially Madonna's take on popular music from the '40s, particularly big-band pop. Although her singing shows a surprising amount of range, the material tends to be nothing more than cutesy novelty numbers, like the double entendre-laden hit Hanky Panky. Dick Tracy has its own soundtrack and score which you can order separately. I'm not sure how her fifth studio album got classified as a soundtrack, but again it's not I remember as a kid saving my money and rushing out and buying this amazing record on May 22, 1990. I remember listening to the countdown at the time and them specifically saying Madonna's Fifth Studio Album Second, the songs featured on her fifth studio album aren't the typical Nineties songs that were played at the time. Madonna takes on a more 1930s1940s sound that went with her character in the movie Dick Tracy. Attached to her role as the nightclub singerfemme fatale in Warren Beattys 1990 film Dick Tracy, Im Breathless wasnt necessarily a proper solo album, but one of those Music From and Inspired By the Film projects that the worlds biggest pop stars always seem compelled to make see also: Princes Batman or, more recently, Beyoncés The. Along with being era-appropriate, the music for Dick Tracy had to fit its aesthetic, one in which the sets looked stripped from the Sunday funnies, every villains face was slathered in prosthetics, and Al Pacino could deliver 85 percent of his lines at a pitch and volume that still somehow didnt feel half as over-the-top as everything else.
